چکیده

Introduction: Radiation neuropathy is one of the severe complications of radiotherapy. The exact pathophysiology underlying the development of radiation neuropathy remains unclear, however direct effects of radiation on schwann cells and radiationinduced fibrosis in the environment of the nerves have appeared to play an important role in the onset of this neuropathy [1,2]. In the clinical setting, neurolysis of the affected nerve from fibrotic tissue is indicated as the preferred surgical treatment. However, although many clinical reports have shown that pain relief is achieved with neurolysis, there is no evidence of recovery of either sensory or motor function impairment [1,3,4]. In other words, just releasing the radiated nerve from fibrosis is not sufficient to treat the radiation-induced neuropathy [2,6]. The aim of this study is to investigate the direct effects of radiation on rat sciatic nerves that are isolated from surrounding soft tissue.

Axonal excitability and motor propagation velocity of peripheral nerves in patients with acute vascular lesions of the brain.

From measurements of maximum and minimum motor nerve propagation velocity and neuronal excitability we conclude that there is a functional loss of motor units and distal nerve "dying back" in persons affected with unilateral acute cerebral vascular lesions. The study also suggests that transynaptic degeneration affects the lower motor neurone function on both sides.

Loss of translation elongation factor (eEF1A2) expression in vivo differentiates between Wallerian degeneration and dying-back neuronal pathology.

Wallerian degeneration and dying-back pathology are two well-known cellular pathways capable of regulating the breakdown and loss of axonal and synaptic compartments of neurons in vivo. However, the underlying mechanisms and molecular triggers of these pathways remain elusive. Here, we show that loss of translation elongation factor eEF1A2 expression in lower motor neurons and skeletal muscle f...

Peripheral nerve involvement in spinocerebellar ataxias.

BACKGROUND In autosomal dominant cerebellar ataxias (ADCAs), it is unclear whether the associated peripheral nerve involvement is always a typical length-dependent axonopathy rather than primary neuronopathy due to neuronal degeneration in the spinal anterior horns and/or dorsal root ganglia. OBJECTIVE To study the nature and extent of peripheral nerve involvement in patients with ADCA. PAT...

O6: Protective Effect of Alpha-Lipoic Acid on Neuronal Degeneration Due to Sciatic Nerve Transection in Rat

Peripheral nerve injury induces inflammation and oxidative stress, which are the most significant causes of the neuronal death. Alpha Lipoic acid (ɑ-LA) as a potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent may counteract the oxidative stress and inflammatory response. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of ɑ-LA on neuronal cell death in L4 dorsal root ganglion (L4-DRG) i...

Conduction Studies in Peripheral Cat Nerve Using Implanted Electrodes: 111. the Effects of Prolonged Constriction on the Distal Nerve Segment

stricted peripheral nerves by implanted, multicontact nerve cuff electrodes and correlated with morphometric histology in selected cases. The physiological and histological responses in nerve to a range of constricting cuffs of standard sizes were readily graded. The initial response to any significant constriction was a transient, focal conduction slowing or block at the constriction, followed...
